[AI Use Case Families 1.0]
An overview of what AI is used for today
By now, Artificial intelligence and its capabilities are at the center of discussions between businesses, startups, policymakers and the general public. While AI as a technical topic itself is rather complex already, its capabilities and the complexity of building an AI-based solution is even harder to grasp. This does not only fuel the hype around AI but also hinders business leaders to identify meaningful applications for AI in their businesses. In what verticals can this technology be applied and which problems does it solve already? What AI-Capabilities does a use-case need and what can one buy “off-the-shelf”? To help businesses and the public alike we now provide a state-of-the-art overview of AI Use Cases. This library of AI Use Case Families is intended to help business leaders, decision makers and every interested individual to quickly evaluate some of the real applications for artificial intelligence. We have gathered 77 Families of AI Use Cases, based on discussions with our partners, experts in the domain of AI and our own work. Each of these Use Case Families contains a multitude of in-company Use Cases. This Library is kept on a meta (or Family) Level to not overwhelm the reader with the hundreds of Use Cases that can be found in each layer. Since the field is evolving rapidly, this library is not complete and will be constantly updated as the field develops.

Reading and navigating the Library
The structure and logical clustering are based on our own startup-landscape (see the German appliedAI Startup Landscape 1.0) and the remarkable work of Shivon Zilis (see Current State of Machine Intelligence 3.0). Our library shows across domains and industries a multitude of Use Case Families is ready to be used and adopted. In many areas solutions already exist and can be built upon. Three layers, from top to bottom help you find a mapping to your business. To search for a Use Case Family that can impact your business start at the top layer. The more you move downwards the more generic the Families become and the easier it is to find relevant Families. The three clusters are organized as follows: Layer 1: Industry Solutions (domain specific Use Case Families): The first cluster of Families of Use Cases is Industry-specific solutions. Use Case Families In this cluster have been adopted in verticals already. They are often implemented as or as part of a novel, domain, and application specific products. If you can not find a relevant case on this layer move downwards. Layer 2: Enterprise Functions (cross-application domain Use Case Families): All Use Case Families in this cluster can be applied across a variety of industries, yet are specific to a certain area or function of an enterprise. In most cases, they focus on increasing the productivity of your organization, independent of your business vertical. If you can not find a relevant case on this layer move downwards. Layer 3: Tech Stack (general AI capability Use Case Families): In this layer, you find generic Use Case Families that represent the basic functionalities and capabilities of many AI-based Use Cases. They are often combined or used as parts of more complex cases. Furthermore, we are using a color code to distinguish between AI use cases that are standardized to that extent that they can be integrated as an API, are offered as a service or product or are dependent on more industry or domain-specific data and therefore require individual development. All Use Cases are visually enriched with their respective needed AI-capability (). We invite you to dig right into this use-case landscape and regularly check for updates. Find out where you can make AI work for you! Feeling a little overwhelmed? Don’t worry, just click on the visualization below to filter the use-case table below by layer or domain and explore step-by-step.

The following Table lists all information that fuels the interactive map. You can search and explore all the Use Case Families that we have published. Each and every family is a clickable link that points to a source that has either implemented a case in this family or gives guidance on how to do so. To make it easy to discuss the results of this Library you can always refer to the static version that includes all titles of the families instead of their respective Reference-Numbers. Please find the static version 1.0 of the Library of AI Use Case Families here. Using our library as part of a presentation, talk or your work is allowed and encouraged as long as you always reference us in the form of our logo. Changes to our library have to be marked as your own changes. The content of this insight is published under CC-BY 4.0. If you want to use it always reference the Icons from glyphicons.com
