ai Startup Landscape 2019
appliedAI selected the 214 best AI startups in Germany and the Handelsblatt published our results.
Together with our contributors, technology companies NVIDIA and Google, as well as six leading Venture Capital companies (Digital+ Partners, Earlybird Capital, High-Tech Gründerfonds, HV Holtzbrinck Ventures, Lakestar, and Unternehmertum Venture Capital Partners), we screened more than 1000 startups to find the best AI startups in Germany.
The German Government will publish the German AI Strategy in autumn 2018. The position paper is an answer to the benchmark paper of the Government from June. It should serve politics and the public as a blueprint and a call for action on how Germany should adopt AI in order to keep up with the world in the AI race.
There is little doubt that AI will be relevant for all companies, regardless of their industry or size. To systematically approach AI and thereby avoid common pitfalls, an AI strategy is needed. Key components in this context are an AI vision, a portfolio of AI use cases, and a clear strategy for the required enabling factors. In our white paper we explain these elements in more detail and give an overview of steps to realize an AI strategy.
German thought leaders on artificial intelligence
Artificial intelligence, the big driver of digitalization, inescapably affects every economy, society, and nation. The perception that countries like the US or China will rule this technology, with Germany being left behind in the process, is widespread and persistent. The challenge is real. But pessimism or abandoning the subject altogether would not only be counterproductive at this point but also wrong. What we are actually seeing is the emergence of a German AI ecosystem shaped by artificial intelligence thought leaders. Here is a selection of the most brilliant players in the field of applied artificial intelligence.
German Startup Landscape of Autonomous Driving
The German startup landscape of autonomous driving was created by the appliedAI Initiative, UVC Partners, and the Digital Hub Mobility and shows (as of December 2018) a total of 71 startups whose products and services enable autonomous driving directly or indirectly. The landscape portrays the large volume of german startups in this space. We aim to give a comprehensive overview through clustering the in two main categories: “Autonomous Driving System” and “Ecosystem”. Startups in the category “Autonomous Driving System” enable the self-driving systems to function (e.g. training data for self-driving models; sensors that enable the vehicle to “see”; maps for safe navigation of the vehicle, ADAS technologies that evolve to level 5, data exchange technologies between vehicles), whereas ecosystem startups provide the necessary customer applications or infrastructure solutions.
In Germany, 132 start-ups now work exclusively or predominantly with artificial intelligence. Together with our partners we identified and evaluated over 600 start-ups to develop the first comprehensive German AI startup landscape. The 132 start-ups that made it onto the landscape are private companies with headquarters or significant development activities in Germany and are founded after 2008. We included only companies that have machine learning (ML) in their core or exhibit a significant usage of ML. We will subsequently publish new insights regarding the German AI start-up landscape to help you get started with this technology and at the same time support our start-ups to get traction.
Identifying real-world business opportunities for the application of AI technologies is crucial for the future success of a business. To provide decision-makers with a guideline and perspective on which problems can be solved by and enriched with AI in their businesses, we provide a comprehensive interactive library of AI Use Cases. The AI Use Case Library is based on our own research and expert insights from our partners and our network. The Library will be constantly updated as the field evolves.
Supporting companies and Startups in the German and European Ecosystem is key to appliedAIs mission: Accelerating the adoption of AI Technology. Therefore we named five overall outstanding startups in the field of AI that originate from the local Ecosystems on Germany. The goal of this list is to name trust-worthy partners for companies to work within this quickly-evolving field. appliedAI has talked to each and every one of those startups in depth. The list of startups will grow over time to name the most important players. We do not name behemoths who are already on everyones map.
